This is an inventory of compositions by James C. Burke for the years 1972 through 1998. The list was compiled in January, 2012. Many appear as free downloads in MusicaNeo. Those listed as not available have not been entered into a notation program. There are several compositions listed as presumed lost, or lost. Copies of these works might still exist in the files of musicians that the composer has worked with in the past. Works listed as discarded no longer exist.

1974  Music for Strings II (1972-01)  Presumed lost  01.
Notes:  The composer lost the score and parts for Music for Strings II (1974-01).

1976  Intonatione  Presumed lost.  01
Notes:  This work for prepared piano was performed at a University of North Carolina at Wilmington Music Department Recital in December, 1976; and on other occasions that the composer does not recall. Copies might exist in collections of several pianists in Wilmington and Greensboro.

Notes:  This work is available in Volume 2 (Chamber Music) as a free download. It was originally performed by Melody Jones (violin) and Richard Deas (piano) at the UNC-Wilmington Music Department Recital in May, 1977. The original title of the work was Lament.

Notes:  The composer no longer has a copy of this work (see 1978-03).

Notes:  This is a work for Super-8 film and electronic music (wild track). The film is in possession of the composer. The reel-to-reel electronic music is ruined.

Notes:  This piece was written for a University Theatre Production at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. It was performed live by Robby Anderson.

Notes:  The first movement of this work was performed on the composer’s senior recital in March, 1980 by Richard Deas and member of the string section of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra.

Notes:  This work is scored for choir (SATB), brass, percussion, and piano. The composer has not entered this score into a notation program.

1982  Double Negative  archived at UNCW  01
Notes:  This is a piece for two film projectors (16mm) and electronic tape. The two reels of film (left screen and right screen) and the tape run simultaneously. Conceived as a multi-movement piece, only the reels of film have survived.  

1982  Volpone (A Musical)  Discarded  02
 This work was performed during the 1982 UNCW Straw Hat/ Summer Stock Threatre season. In 1985-86, the text and piano score was edited into a final manuscript and submitted to a subsidy publisher (charges a fee). The composer was dissuaded from following this course of action. The work was eventually discarded. Copies of the original text and score might exist, but are unknown to the composer.

Notes:  This was a piece for solo bassoon. It was performed one at a composer’s symposium at Winston-Salem, NC. The manuscript was lost during the move from Greensboro back to Wilmington during December of that year.

Notes:  This piece was written as the overture for an original play The Garden that was produced in Wilmington by Ad Hoc Theatre, Ltd. in 1988. The score was never used for the play. The score is included in Volume 5 (Modern), and is available as a free download. 1991  Electronic Symphony  Discarded  01
Notes:  A composition composed for the Amiga 500 computer. The composition was performed at the Wilmington Chapter of the North Carolina Composer’s Alliance concert in Wilmington. The computer, program, and disks connected with this work were discarded. The score for the Electronic Symphony was orchestrated for three pieces for traditional instruments (see 1990-01, 1993-01, and 1997-01).
